Lagos State University (LASU) has increased the retirement age of professors to 70 years. This is coming barely one month after the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, had claimed that retirement was not part of the newly-amended LASU Bill.
Yesterday, the university in a statement from its Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations said, the governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who is also the visitor to the university has approved a new retirement age for the teaching and non-teaching staff of the varsity.
“The new Section: 42 (6) of the Lagos State University (as amended) Law 2016 is as follows: Retirement Age: 42 (I) as from the commencement of this law, the retiring age for: – (a) Academic staff in the professorial cadre shall be 70 years; (b) Academic staff (not in professorial cadre) shall be 65 years; and (c) Non-academic staff shall be 65 years.”
The bill, signed into law on January 5, 2016 by Governor Ambode, pegs the retirement age for academic staff at 70 and 65 years for non-academic staff members.
A copy of the law seen by The Guardian, confirmed that the approval was part and parcel of the bill that the governor signed into law.
The emergence of the document Monday, however, threw the campus into a frenzy as the about 30 professors, who were directed to prepare their exit had five more years added to their service.
As the affected professors and indeed the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) were exploring options available to them in the wake of the infamous directive, the vice chancellor had claimed that retirement was not part of the amended law.
Fagbohun insisted that the LASU Amendment Bill 2015 was an improvement over the two previous amendments in 1990 and 1992, which only changed the status of the university to be residential.
The law had reportedly approved a five-year-single term for the vice-chancellor as demanded by the workers’ unions on the campus
