There was palpable tension at the headquarters of the Ministry of Health in Abuja yesterday, as workers again shut down the place, over the rate of alleged corruption and other misconduct at the ministry.
The workers shut down power supply, switched off the elevators and insisted that the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Amina Shamaki, stay away from the ministry and is redeployed by the Head of Service of the Federation.
They say the ministry has the highest number of officials quizzed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) every month and attributed this to the level of corruption allegedly prevalent in the system.
The workers had three weeks ago protested, where they approached the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita, accusing Dr. Shamaki of corruption and incompetence and asked that she be redeployed from the ministry. The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation called for calm and immediately set up a committee to investigate the workers’ allegations.
Apparently for security concerns, the permanent secretary had stayed away from office after the protest. But she returned to work yesterday with armed security personnel.
