Enyimba Football Club line up before a match.
Enyimba yesterday defeated Warri Wolves 2-1 in one of their outstanding games to move to the second spot on the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) table.
The Peoples Elephant, who are playing their home games in Umuahia due to on-going renovation works on their Aba Stadium, have Andrew Abalogu to thank for the win, as his strike 18 minutes from time ensured the three points went to the defending champions.
The game was poised at 1-1 when Abalogu prodded Chima Akas’ free kick home to give the CAF Champions League contenders the laurels.
Enyimba gave their fans hope of an easy day when Christian Pyagbara scored just a minute into the game, but Wolves cancelled the lead in the 44th minute through Shedrack Oghu, who capitalised on ThankGod Ike’s mistake to beat Theophilus Afelokhai.
The Warri boys were made to play 10 against 11 when Solomon Okpako got the marching orders in the 75th minute, but the hosts could not make the most of their numerical advantage.
Enyimba now have 30 points from 16 matches, but they have played two games less than the leaders, Rivers United.
